Obituary for Bernadette "Bunny" Phyllis Smith

Bernadette (Bunny) P. Smith was called home by her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 15, 2020 at the age of 83.

Born in Queens, New York on September 17, 1936, Bunny spent her life in Massachusetts, Texas and Arkansas. She obtained her nursing degree in Austin, Texas at the age of 19, specializing in labor and delivery. She also held degrees in journalism and law.

She had a zest for life and a great love of people and animals of all kinds. She was an accomplished equestrian who competed in Texas and neighboring states. She was a member of the Houston Symphony Chorale and the Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus. She moved to Kingston, Arkansas in 1993, practiced nursing in Berryville, became an avid gardener and goat farmer and was a regular vendor at the Eureka Springs Farmers Market.

Bunny was a devout Christian who loved her Lord and serving others. For a time she served as an Oblate at the Subiaco Abbey and was a longtime member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Berryville.

Bunny is survived by her daughters Martha (David) Schlesselman, Kristin (Michael) Johnson; grandchildren Christopher Thompson, Evan Groll, Lauren (Stephen) Miller, Paige (Tanner) Maffett, Kira (John) Strid, Lauren (Joel) Schneeberger, Jenna (William) Herbert; and 8 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and DeRetta Smith and her sister, Marilyn Smith.

In light of the current pandemic restrictions, a public memorial service is not planned at this time. Memorial gifts in Bernadette’s name may be made to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 614 South Main St, Berryville, AR 72616. Cremation arrangements under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
